The Navajo Nation Historic Preservation Department within the Division of Natural Resources is the Navajo Nation’s agency responsible for the protection, preservation and management planning for the Navajo Nation’s cultural resources.

The Navajo Nation Historic Preservation Department exists to promote the sovereignty of the Navajo Nation by:

  • Promoting respect for and encouraging Navajo heritage and tradition,


  • Seeking the guidance and support of the Navajo people in developing and implementing programs to preserve, protect and manage the cultural resources of the Navajo Nation and its people, and


  • Meeting the community and economic development needs of the Navajo people by ensuring the harmonious co-existence of the Navajo Way with the “present world”.
