The National Institute of Culture is a public agency, branched from the Department of Education, with legal status, of internal public right and with financial, economic, administrative, and technical autonomy.

As principal entity and head office of the surrounding 24 divisions, it is responsible for executing the politics of the State in cultural matter.

The INC's purpose is to affirm the National Identity by actions of protection, conservation and promotion, while contributing to the nation by means of development with the active participation of the community and the private and public sectors.

Among its functions is to formulate and to execute the politics and strategies of the State in matters of cultural development, defense, conservation, diffusion and investigation of the Cultural Heritage of the Nation (Law Nº 28296) and with the Supreme Decree Nº 50-94-ED, Regulation of Organization and Functions of the INC.
