Jabal AlBanat

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Project Resources

Jabal al-Banat is a striking sandstone outcrop at Hegra in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, carved with one of the largest clusters of Nabataean rock-cut tombs. Around 29 monumental tombs are cut into the rock on multiple sides, their façades decorated with steps, pilasters, and stylized motifs typical of Nabataean architecture. The name Jabal al-Banat (“Mountain of the Girls/Women”) reflects the fact that many of these tombs were commissioned by or for women, something confirmed by inscriptions that record female owners and their legal rights. Created in collaboration with Saudi ICOMOS, the Royal Commission for AlUla, and members of the AlUla community, this Tapestry draws on previously collected 3D data and new interviews to bring the stories of Jabal AlBanat to life for global audiences.
