Tomb of Tanwetamani | El Kurru

Sudan
Project Resources

El Kurru, an archaeological site in Northern Sudan, stands as a testament to the region's historical past and is home to a royal cemetery, where the rulers of ancient Kush were laid to rest. Nestled on the banks of the Nile River, the site is particularly renowned for the remarkably preserved Tomb of Tanwetamani, the king of Kush who also held the title of the last pharaoh of Egypt's Twenty-fifth Dynasty. His tomb, resplendent with elaborately preserved paintings and hieroglyphics provides a fascinating glimpse into the belief systems of 2,500 years ago. Today, the site is protected by an engaged local community that works to protect the site and share this important history with the rest of the world.
